5 things you should do before giving a phone to your kids

The moment has come when your child is ready to keep a phone with him. Among other things, this is a relieve for you as a parent since you will be able to communicate and always be there for him/her. However, there are some things you need to consider before finally gifting a phone to your child. Depending on the age, some of the advices are to a higher priority, but in general all of them need to be followed so that you don’t have unpleasant surprises later. Here is a top 5 the team of smartphone specialists at PricePanda recommend.

1. Give some direction on how to use it

It happens that some parents give the phone to their kids and allow them to explore and learn everything themselves. This is not the best way since they are opening a new world to their kids and there need to be some guides on how to behave in this new environment. Teach them how to navigate and use some useful apps. Make some test phone calls so that they know how to do it. You should teach them that the phone is not something they can play as a toy but instead to be careful and use it properly.

2. Control app purchases

If you don’t take some small measurements ahead, you may end up paying some fees from different purchases that your son or daughter did. This happens usually with games. There are plenty of games out there asking to pay so they give you access to the next level or some help to pass it. You can prevent this unpleasant situation by blocking the in-app purchases. For Apple’s smartphones there is the restriction in which it is needed to type your password before entering in the online Store. If your kids are too young, you can keep that password for yourself and download only the apps you think are useful. In case you want that your son or daughter have more freedom regarding to apps, you can use the parental controls offered both by Apple and Android smartphones. One thing you can do is for example, setting a PIN which need to be entered anytime you want to make a purchase.

3. Buy a case for the phone

In order to protect your investment you really need to buy a nice case for the phone. Kids are always playing and you never know when they can drop it creating an unpleasant situation. You can prevent it by just a small effort. Be sure though, to choose a nice cover according to your child’s taste if you really want him/her to always keep it.

4. Download security apps

To make your job easier, there are thousands of apps which can be really beneficial. One of this apps is the Lookout Mobile. This is a security app which automatically protects your kids from downloading bad apps or visiting unsafe websites that can be harmful. This bad apps or websites can compromise your personal data and privacy giving unpleasant results at the end or destroying your phone. This app is also great in case you are not able to find the phone. You can remotely locate it by making the phone sound a loud Scream to help find it.

5. Block texting while driving

Even if your children are already teens, you need to take care of them and teach how to smartly use their phones. One of the reasons that causes many accidents nowadays is the use of the mobile while driving. Even that in many countries this is not allowed, most of the people still do it. You can make your kids safer if you block the ability to text while driving. There is an app exactly for this which is called tXtBlocker and doesn’t allow you to text while you are in motion. For having this, you need to pay a small amount of money every month, but you will feel better knowing that your son or daughter is safer. In case you can’t afford it, you have another option which is available for free and reads the text messages and emails aloud once they are received. This innovative app is called DriveSafe.ly.
